I am a little surprised by the fact that things in this play have run pretty smoothly in this play in comparison to the others, especially Titus Andronicus. Of course there's already been deceit, violence, etc, but I am particularly surprised that Castiza has not been raped yet (unless I totally missed it somewhere). I know that her mom was plotting to whore her out, but she later decided against it. With so much reference to sex and chastity in this play, I would have thought that she would have been one of the first targets by all of the others... unless it was because Junior Brother was the only rapist in the play and was now dead and incapable of committing the act? Whichever the case, this is indication that the title of the play is either 1) meant to build up expectation but is actually quite distanced from the actual events of the play, 2) an indication that the true tragedy is eventual (perhaps at the very end as in all others?), or 3) that the only tragedy will happen to Vindice (as a self-proclaimed revenger -- IV.ii.179). There is definitely something sneaky going on in this play since the actual tragedy has been limited, so I am really anticipating a big and eventful ending.
Also, as a side note, the movie version of this play is pretty messed up. Was that simply the director's style, or is it an indicative of how truly absurd this play is?
